Hanging Flower Baskets

Every year the City of St. Clairsville lines its downtown streets with hanging baskets of flowers to provide color, warmth and a friendly atmosphere. Many times city employees are asked about the baskets as to what flowers are used and how they were created. We have provided the following information concerning the hanging baskets seen along Main Street and on the bike trail.

The hanging baskets are 20 inch baskets with a 20 inch liner. These are not a common size found locally so they are ordered from Braun Horticulture. A phone number for an interested party would be 716.282-6101 or 800.246.6984.

The soil used to plant the flowers is Premier Pro Mix General Purpose Growing Medium. This can be found at most local landscapers such as Ponzani's Florist.

The plant food is a handful mix of Osmocote plant food 18-6-12 and soil before planting the flowers. This again can be found locally as places such as Lowe's.

The plants are watered with Peters All Purpose Plant Food 20-20-20 mixed with water. This can also be found locally such as at Lowe's. Watering is usually done daily early in the morning to avoid conflict with parked vehicles in the street.

How to Make Beautiful Hanging Baskets

To create the basket:

  • First put the liner in the basket
  • Then place a pie pan on the bottom of the liner to retain water
  • Soil and a handful of Osmocote plant food can be mixed and placed in the liner
  • Plant the desired flowers in the basket
  • Water the plants with Peters Plant Food. The City waters 6 days a week with a weak fertilizer mix.

The City of St. Clairsville has selected the following flowers for this year's planters and baskets:

  • 3 Wave Petunia (Purple, Lilac & Red)
  • 2 Million Bells (Yellow & Orange)
  • 2 Vinca Vine
  • 3 Geranium (Red) - Red is found to be the tallest and visible when hung 10 ft high
  • 3 Verbena (Purple, White & Red)
  • 1 Spike

Some of the baskets will be planted exactly as above, others will go heavy on one or two colors. Example: One basket may be all red while another will be purple with white.

The completed baskets are hung on the lamp posts throughout the downtown area and at the Gazebo at the bike trail. Watering the hanging baskets is done early in the morning when there are fewer vehicles parked along Main Street.
